How much does a mobile app cost in India?

Ask what a mobile app costs and you will hear anything from "a few lakh" to "it depends" to a suspiciously precise quote from someone who has not asked a single question about your app. The honest answer, as with any custom build, is that scope decides the price. But you can understand the levers well enough to know roughly where your app will land, and how to keep it affordable.

Here is what actually drives the cost of a mobile app in India, realistic ranges, and the costs most people forget.

Why there is no single price

A mobile app can be a simple booking tool or a full marketplace with payments, chat, and real-time tracking. Both are "a mobile app," and they can differ in cost by 20 times or more. So instead of a single number, it helps to understand what moves the price up and down.

The factors that drive the cost

Platforms: iOS, Android, or both

Building for both iOS and Android costs more than one, but you rarely have to build twice. Modern cross-platform frameworks let one codebase serve both, which is usually the cost-effective choice.

Native vs cross-platform

Cross-platform (React Native or Flutter) builds both apps from one codebase. It is faster and cheaper, and for the vast majority of apps the quality is indistinguishable from native. Fully native (separate Swift and Kotlin builds) is worth it only for apps that lean hard on device performance or the latest platform features. For most businesses, cross-platform is the right call, and it is what we lead with in our mobile app development work.

Features and complexity

This is the biggest lever. Logins, payments, chat, maps, push notifications, offline mode, real-time updates, each is real engineering. A simple content or booking app is inexpensive. An app with accounts, payments, and live data is a different scale.

The backend

Most apps are only half an app. The other half is the backend: the server, database, and APIs that store data, handle logins, and power everything the app shows. A simple app may need very little. A social or transactional app needs a real backend, and that is a meaningful part of the budget.

Design

A clean, thoughtfully designed app costs more than a bare functional one, but design is not decoration. On mobile, good design is what makes people keep the app instead of deleting it after one use.

Store launch

Getting an app live on the App Store and Play Store involves developer accounts, store guidelines, review, and the occasional back-and-forth with Apple. It is not a huge cost, but it is real work, and doing it right avoids rejections.

Realistic cost ranges in India

Treat these as market context, not a quote:

  • A simple app, a few screens, one core function, minimal backend. Example: a booking or catalogue app. Roughly ₹3-8 lakh.
  • A mid-complexity app, accounts, payments, a real backend, push notifications, polished design. Example: a services marketplace or a delivery app. Roughly ₹8-20 lakh.
  • A complex app, real-time features, chat, heavy integrations, built to scale to many users. Example: a full social or on-demand platform. Typically ₹20 lakh and up.

The range is wide because apps span everything from a simple utility to a full product. Scoping your specific app is the only way to narrow it.

The costs people forget

The build is not the end. Budget for:

  • Maintenance and updates, iOS and Android release new versions every year, and your app has to keep up or it breaks. Plan for ongoing maintenance.
  • Backend and hosting, monthly server and infrastructure costs that scale with usage.
  • Store fees, an Apple Developer account (a yearly fee) and a one-time Google Play fee.
  • Improvements, once real users are in, you will learn what to add next. That is success, and worth budgeting for.

Do you even need an app?

Worth asking honestly before you spend. A website is where people find you; an app is where they come back. An app is worth building when repeat, daily use is the point, when you need push notifications, offline access, or the camera and GPS. If you mainly need to be found and contacted, a fast mobile-friendly website is often enough, and a fraction of the cost. A good partner will tell you which one you actually need.

The bottom line

A mobile app is priced by what you are building, not by a flat rate. Cross-platform keeps most apps affordable, the backend and features drive the cost, and the store launch and ongoing maintenance are real line items to plan for. Above all, make sure an app is genuinely the right tool before you build one.
